It is interesting to see most of us wearing green and gold on Australia Day, however our flag is blue and red. Why is it green and gold when the flag is red and blue?

Green and gold are the colours of the Australian Olympic and International sporting event uniforms. People who are into sports will wear these instead of the colours of the flag.
I think the flag signifies the British Colors while the green and gold signifies the sporting colors.
I agree that it might be related to sports. Still, I wonder what people not into sports wear with that line of reasoning.
I wondered about that too. I think it mostly has to do with sporting colors!
Good question...I guess it is to distinguish between sports groups!
Maybe it's time for a new flag.
one's history and the other is marketing. We historically have a flag that symbolises Australia's colonial and commonwealth history and we have not yet moved from that position with regard to the flag. Marketing Australia in an international domain however, primarily but not restricted to sport, determined that green and gold depicted or evoked Australia. Actually one way of seeing how this 'marketing' strategy has changed over the years is to look at how the Australian olympic uniform has changed over the years....
I think the green and gold comes from the nature, as in the trees, wattle, etc.
You are correct Amanda. Green and gol were chosen because they are the colour of Wattle.

Green & Gold are our National Colours, after our National Flower, the Golden Wattle.
These colours are on our Coat of Arms.

They represent the desert lands, beaches, & minerals, the eucalypts, scrub & shrubs of 'the bush'.

They're specific colours, set in Australian Federal Regulations, & can't be varied.
It would be very confusing if we dressed for sporting events by the colour of our flag. The teams from England , New Zealand ,Australia and several other nations would all be dressed in the same colours. 🇦🇮🇦🇺🇻🇬🇨🇻🇫🇰🇭🇹🇧🇶🇨🇰🇭🇷🇫🇴🇫🇷🇹🇫🇮🇸🇱🇷🇳🇿🇵🇳🇵🇾🇵🇷🇬🇸🇸🇭🇷🇺🇵🇦🇳🇱
