I check three things when looking for a hotel: Price, Guest Reviews and Bedbug Reports. I've stayed in one hotel where my wife and I left with over 150 bed bug bites between is us.You'd be surprised how many resources are out there that measure bed bugs in hotels.
I use tripadvisor, agoda and wotif to gauze information on potential accomodation arrangements. Price, amenities, proximity to tourist attractions, customer reviews have quite an influence on my decision-making process when comes to choosing a hotel.
Location, Budget then Reviews. If the reviews are bad then I will choose something where the reviews are better even if I have to pay a little more!
If it is in the budget. However lately I seem to prefer to rugged wild wild west!
By star rating and then location. Use such sources as agoda.com
For us, it needs interconnecting rooms, affordable and then I check trip advisor that there's not something wrong with it...
I research about a month prior to the trip, using sites such as agoda.com, tripadvisor and lonelyplanet. The decision is based on budget, location and reviews.
Usually Hotels.
Have stayed in some top-notch, beautiful Hotels in my life. What an experience! Something which means more than money.

Probably the most beautiful was the Nile Hilton.
Seeing the sun set over the Giza Plain with the Pyramids, was dreamlike!

Always stayed at the 'Regent Palace' in London, as could just 'fall into' Picadilly Tube, to go anywhere!
Since 2003, our holidays have always been on a cruise ship. Ah yes, we stayed in 2 hotels during a 3 week holiday in Bangalore India, for a family wedding. Then 3 days in a cheap hotel in Singapore, before the Bali wedding (2017), where we stayed in 2 home stays in Bali, during a 2 week stay for a 2nd family wedding, but they were the only non cruise holidays we'd since since 2003.
When visiting our granddaughters in Melbourne, we stay with the youngest daughter (without the kids), so we don't need a hotel in Melbourne.
