Reading aloud to children is a great way to get them interested in books. Many adults also enjoy being read to. Some books lend themselves to reading aloud more than others. Which is your favourite?
The Hobbit is a great one for reading to kids. I also have very fond memories of being read the BFG as a kid by a family friend who did all the voices. Kipling's Just So Stories and the Jungle Book are also good. A great reader can really help make a book come to life.
The only time I have really enjoyed reading aloud was when my son was little. Our favourite book was "Guess How Much I Love You". It's been a while since I have read that.
My mind wanders when things get read allowed. It goes through one ear and one the other, so I'm not much fond of that kind of reading. I prefer to be by myself and read to myself.
Whatever their literary merit, many Golden Books are great fun to read aloud and engage the childeren to the extent they want to hear them over and over again. The Friendly Book is a great favourite, as is the Happy Man and His Dump Truck. The latter is now being read to the third generation. It's appeal is timeless.
Shaun Tan's picture books, including 'The Arrival' and 'Tales From Outer Suburbia' are great for reading out aloud to kids. Another good one is 'Are We There Yet?' by Alison Lester.
