What's the best children's TV show?

Children's television has evolved a lot. There are some pretty entertaining shows that cover broad ages, and there are some highly irritating ones too, which for some reason always seem to be your child's favourite.

Do you have a kids show that you like to watch? Or is there one that you think is educationally better than the others? Or just one that doesn't irritate you at the sound of the theme music? What do you think is the best in children's television?

An old time classic: Sesame Street. Although American, this TV show is educational, light and funny. A great way for kids to learn the alphabet and counting their numbers before they start school.
In terms of best children's television overall, I think the original Scooby Doo, Where Are You? cartoons excellent. There a lots of other Golden Age cartoons that were not specifically designed for children, but make great children's viewing.

Today I don't think children's TV is as good, but there are a few that stand out. Since I dont have kids, I don't watch them, but I've heard that Peppa Pig is one of the best and most popular.

My favourite children's TV show is Disney's The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. It teaches about friendship and is unbelievably cute.
I still believe that the best show on TV for children is Playschool! I loved it when I was little and now my son loves it. It has great characters, songs and rhymes, easy to do at home arts and crafts and story time. It's a lot of fun whilst also being educational. I still think it is number 1!
I wish romper room was back on, my husband was in that when he was little. I would love my son to watch it. Bring back that and Mr Scribble :)

I agree with the other answers here, Playschool and Sesame Street for educational TV shows, otherwise for entertainment value - Peppa Pig.
On a recent visit to the Aquarium, I was stunned to see how much my children knew about aquatic animals, their names, their habitats, what they eat, where they live, and other marine "lingo". When I asked them how they knew about all this, they told me they had learnt all this from a show called "Octonauts". It's a cartoon show with a great message and lots of interesting and accurate information about marine animals.
I agree, Sesame Street, Play school, Mister Maker are all excellent shows for kids which give them a great imagination.
I don't know why but I absolutely love 'In the Night Garden'!
