My favourite is Dali's Girl at Window. We used to live in Vietnam, so we got a number of reproduction paintings. My sister was given a beautiful reproduction of this painting for her birthday one year from the painter. I was always a little jealous as a kid, because my birthday was 9 days earlier, and if we'd walked into the store on my birthday instead, I probably would have been given the painting.
But a few years ago the painting ended up in my room, on my wall that also features a window looking out to the Ocean, and I just had one of those moments when a painting makes you feel something and you don't even know why. I plan to get my own someday.
What a beautiful painting. To me, it has a serene feel, there was a programme on SBS yesterday about him, but I only caught a few minutes of it. Girl at Window must have been before his surreal era?
I love watercolours, and I have a framed free give away with a daily paper - the person in front of me in the queue tossed it in the bin! It's by Serat, a scene of bathers by the Seine.
But we love Jeffrey Smart's work. Very stark, but here in Adelaide we have a very modern new building we call the cheesegrater, atm. it has cranes in the background, with the tram passing by, a plane overhead, its like driving through one of his paintings...
