Sports in essence are games played using a number of skills from physical to intellectual. However, some sports can be too physical where young children might incur an serious injury. When is a good age to introduce sports to kids?

At home when kids are young, you can show them some friendly sports like kicking a foam soccer ball outside, or even to have a paddle in a fairly shallow pool. But to let them start in a team or rougher sport, it would be around 7 or 8.
There are lots of fun ways that very young kids can be introduced to sports. Most public swimming pools have baby and toddler sessions so that little ones can get confident in the water before taking up actual swimming classes. Young kids can also be encouraged to enjoy hiking from a very early age when they go on family bushwalks, and even babies and toddlers can be taken in a pram on sealed trails, and therefore enjoy the fun. Similarly, littlies can get a taste for cycling by riding behind Mum or Dad in a toddler seat or buggy, and when they get a bit bigger graduate to their own little bike. As children get older these fun family activities can develop into serious sports or hobbies that they can enjoy on their own.

Many other sports, from roller-skating to football to surfing to gymnastics also offer gentle introductory sessions that are suitable for very young kids. Try different things with your child or ask them what they're interested in, and then see if there are local clubs that offer introductory sessions for very young kids.
I think kids begin to play sports from a very early stage when they learn to walk or throw a ball. However, the general rule of thumb is 8 years of age, although there are some sports that require children to partake in the sports from an earlier age such as gymnastics.
The younger the better for individual sports. About year one level for team based sports.
Depends on what kind of sports you are thinking of. If it's good old swimming then even a toddler can do it. Otherwise, you need to consider whether the child is capable of playing these kind of sports (you can't expect your baby to play football if he can't run properly), and whether it will affect the his physical development. While appropriate exercising is good, overexerting oneself is really bad for both adults and children.
I think maybe at 2 one can play ball, and run with them...and build it up, till they say I want to do so & so....as a sport, as they get older maybe 7 or 8.

If you have put the time in, they will be great on their feet.As far as incurring a injury, well that can happen, but in life we must not let that hold us back.

If you make it a routine, they soon catch on very fast.
It should be done a little in the yard per day.....please be careful not to get carried away.

There are going to be children who absolutely hate sport!
Then that's fine.

You must never force a child, if that is the case...no matter what.
They will grow up to be very unhappy people.

Sport is something 'that' person has to enjoy, and hopefully yours will.

I have three grown sons, none like sport!
Not to play or watch....they do very well in their lives, and that's all I can ask.
Depends on the sport, & how involved child is in it.

I started swimming competitively at 7. Finished at 20.
Started horse-riding at 8. Still not finished.
