What are some innovative ways for couples to better spend time with each other?

My partner and I go to lunch/dinner dates out in town, or plan a day trip once every three months owing to limited access to transport to go great distances, but we often find ourselves stumped on ideas of things we can do together without costing us a fortune or being too monotonous an activity.

Any suggestions?

When you really set your mind to it, there are many cool ways that you and your partner can spend some quality time together:

A trip away - even if its only for a day. Sometimes my partner and I go for country drives - places only a couple of hours out of Sydney, even for the day. Great way to connect to nature.
Have coffee together - even if its only for 15 minutes (like a pit-stop), and at least you've seen each other.
Long lunches - my partner can take as long as he wants off work for lunch, and generally makes up for it by staying back at the office.

Through my work I also get invited out to functions etc, and hence bring my partner along and vice versa.
That sounds so sweet- I wish money wasn't such a huge limiting factor :(

Well your picture of two people holding hands as the sun go's down is one.

Try and get to the beach at say 7:30 PM! find a nice spot, and just have a drink and few nibbles...Listen to the Ocean.
You don't have to talk, let the beach do that....it is one of my most favourite things to do on hot summer nights.
There is something quite amazing, as you watch at night the waves come in....and listen to them. Few people do it, they all are home watching t.v.!
Take a blanket, and just have some quite downtime together, that costs very little.ENJOY!!
1. Themed hotels for breaks away
2. Twilight boat rides
3. Go on a who dunnit murder mystery experience
Simple things such as cooking meals together or attempt a DIY home improvement project. If you like outdoors, how about tandem biking in the park? Should be fun...
Picnics together can be nice if you've got time to do the planning - pick a great spot with a lovely view and pack up your favourite treats for a twilight picnic. Go cycling or take up a sport together. Walks in an area you like can be lovely. Planning for the future is a nice passtime for couples if you're getting "serious".

You don't have to spend much money to have a good time.
If you both like movies and tv series and are sick of watching the ones you already own, why don't you organise a group swap of your copies with those of your friends and family?

It is a great way to share and pool resources!
Often hard with kids, but try to get some alone time when they are busy or gone to bed, and really engage with each other. Even if it's just over a drink or nightly dinner. (So no dinner in front of the tv!)
My husband and I like to play card games and board games, though it can become more competitive than either of us would like. We also like to go for walks around the block and chat about our day.
