Well, it wasn't a decision as such for me, it was just the next step as everyone I knew was going to university. It never occurred to me NOT to move out! And having gained some independence I would never have wanted to move back.... I did stay with my parents for a few weeks whilst waiting for a house purchase to go through and that was not fun. My mum kept waiting up to make sure I got home safely....
I had one of those mums who used emotional blackmail. She made me feel guilty when I told her I was getting married. I think she would have liked it if I lived at home forever! As it was, I still felt an obligation to visit all the time and take her everywhere. I was ready to cut the apron-strings but she wasn't.
I moved to Perth from Sydney to be with the man I was going to marry.
So while it was very exciting to start a new life, it was also a tough decision to leave my parents, family, and the friends I had had for some 18 odd years.
At 17 I left home to go to university. If i was going to do further study and get a career I had to leave home so it was an easy decision. I lived in a girls' hostel so had plenty of company. Breakfast and tea were provided so I was only responsible for getting my own lunch. I had to do my own washing but living in a hostel was an easy transition from my parents' house to living independently.
