Is it ok to dress as Hitler for a fancy dress party?

A friend of mine said that if he ever hosted a fancy dress party, he’d go as Hitler. I told him that if that was the case, he could forget about inviting me. He was taken aback, but so was I. I don’t think it would be appropriate to dress as Hitler, or anyone along those lines.

What do you think? Is it ok to dress as Hitler for a fancy dress party or even Halloween? Is this a matter of political correctness or simple courtesy?

Tough one. Most people who dress as Hitler are taking the mick out of him. They are intending to disrespect Hitler rather than the people who were effected by his action. For those who were persecuted or closely affected by his actions, however, it can be offensive. It is therefore better to play it safe than sorry.

The answer for this in my opinion is quite clear.
No...it is not acceptable to dress as Hitler at any time.
That crosses too many boundaries, no matter what age a person is!

Yes, why not, people can be too precious and too PC these days. I don't get like any evil person! Of course it is a send up, an easy costume to wear, and nearly everyone in the world knows he was evil, as was Genghis khan, Atilla the Hun, and Vlad Dracula just to mention a few!
