My four year old son suddenly asked this morning "What is God?". I struggled to find a way to explain the concept to him that he could understand.

It probably won't help you if you're a believer, but I told mine that God is a story that people made up to help explain the universe. She sees Bible stories the same way that she does the Norse and Greek myths we read to her.
I don't have an answer, but this is a tricky topic. It really depends on your own beliefs but maybe just talking about God in terms of "stories" and fables and how people explain things. We are Catholic but don't attend church regularly so I'm going to be facing some tricky times.
Before people understood the scientific reasons behind why things happened, many cultures believed super powerful beings were behind it.These beings are called gods. Some cultures have many gods, but Christians have just one. Some people believe that God is a powerful creature that created all life on earth. Many people worship God, because they believe he created and looks after us. He is meant to have unlimited powers and can see and hear everything we do. We now have the scientific knowledge to know how a lot of things are done, but some people still believe God exists. There is no proof that he does or does not, so it is up to you to decide.
Nope. I have no need to tell them about religion at that age.
If they have no idea and I didn't either, I may look up some information or borrow library books to help explain it. Kids at that age who ask questions deserve honest answers, even in a topic like this when parents may not believe.

I would say: GOD is a very loving Big Daddy who cares for us, and who made everything!
