How do you keep yourself calm when walking alone at night?

Write because you want to, not because you have to.

There are often times when it gets late by the time work is finished, and you end up walking home alone late at night.

I blame movies and TV shows for instilling the paranoia, but there's always a fear that the worst is going to happen.

How do you maintain your composure when walking alone at night? Would listening to music be a good idea, or would that hinder with your alertness to your surroundings?

Firstly, you must be very aware of everything around you. Next you need to carry your keeps in your hand as defense. It is good to have self defense classes so you can act instinctively. And how you walk is important. Walk confident as you are ready to tackle a bear.
I feel quite safe at night, I am used to it. Doesn't phase me. In areas such as Sydney's Kings Cross I'd need to be with someone. Have self defence skills, and have used them plenty of times before.
I don't go out at night and if I do it's usually with friends so I don't ever really have to walk alone.

It is a not something any woman should do....given that their are predators out there. It makes no difference 'where' you are.Walking home, at night is not too bad, but once your past pm, then you really shouldn't even consider it.
Keep change to get a bus, taxi or get a family member to pick you up.
It is not t.v. shows and movies that instil paranoia and fear into women, but a knowing...they could be a victim.
After all it has happened, we see on the news...it will continue to happen, until women stop walking late at night.
If one says 'you should be able..or it's a rite'', that's a given....but now we live in a world, that has predators.
You can't stop that.
I go running at night with my music on as currently that is the coolest time for me to go and when the kids are in bed. I stay vigilant and I look for shadows near me. I have a key in my hand which is use as a weapon if need be and I have also done a self defense course. Where I run is pretty safe and less than a km from my house so I could get home quickly if need be. There are also well lit streets just adjacent to where I jog. There are definitely areas where I wouldn't walk late at night though, as there's no point taking unnecessary risks. I was mugged at uni and whilst I wasn't hurt, it definitely made me more alert and aware to dangers.
Listening to music would be a bad idea because you wouldn't hear anyone creeping up on you. If you have a mobile and someone to call, call them while you're on the walk, at least then they could call for help if it ever was needed. Most of the time you're probably fine, but if you could walk with someone else like a colleague it would be that much safer.

Believe it or not , I have never walked alone at night! and I hope I will never have to. But If I did I think I will try to be calm and go on a brisk walk and get to where ever I am going quickly without any unwanted contact. I would also stay away from isolated areas. With that bit of self defense knowledge I have, I will be alright...or so I think! Oh and I will never listen to music for I want to be alert every step of my way.
I would not walk alone in most places unless I had one of my dogs with me.
Too much happens here at night to innocent people just going about their business.

Take out your phone and call somebody, alternatively pretend your talking to somebody.
