Have you used self storage for your possessions?

I have on a few occasions. For the most part everything worked out, except the last time. The facility was indoors and one storage locker was filled with stuff where the owner had a bedbug infestation. He stored all his stuff and brought the infestation the to facility. The owner of the storage facility had an exterminator in but didn't tell anyone who was renting space. We only found out because we had a rug rolled up on the floor in our storage locker that got drenched with so much sticky bug poison, it was glued to the concrete floor. That didn't leave the greatest impression.

I've never really had the need for extra storage for any variety of items. I would probably need an extra chest of drawers for clothes and that's it.

We have a rumpus room and two sheds here thankfully! No need to storage.

Haven't had the need. I find that if I store something away, I don't use it. This often means I didn't need it in the first place.

We have moved around a lot in the last few years and every house has been a different shape, needing different furniture. So we have acquired various bits and pieces to make each house work but then had surplus of other pieces that don't fit in....
Now we have moved back to England, into our original house which is a lot smaller than more recent ones and we have a garage bulging with stuff we have nowhere to put in the house. We are intending to move somewhere bigger in a few months time but in the meanwhile, we need to find some proper storage before the winter months set in and all our possessions freeze in the garage....

Yes, at one point I moved in to a one bedroom flat for a while so I had to put a bunch of stuff in storage. I hope not to have to do that again. The plan now is to just get rid of anything I can't fit in my home.

Oh, and re. tips for storage: Make sure your boxes are properly sealed to keep out bugs. You can put something in as repellent too. From memory we used cloves and lavender, and I found a natural spray that keeps moths off clothing. I don't like to use napthalene (the stuff in moth balls) because it's carcinogenic and the fumes give me headaches. Some well meaning person put napthalene in with our clean sheets and I had to wash them and hang them out multiple times to get the smell out enough to sleep on them again.

I associate the smell of mothballs with my grandmas, so it's comforting for me! You're right though, the chemicals in them are not so good. I'd forgotten about cloves, we used to make pomanders to hang in our wardrobes with cloves stuck in an orange, very effective!

We have used storage in the past when we were travelling. Now we just have boxes stashed in our "spare" room. We are planning to move into a bigger house soon.

They are very expensive, especially if you just want to store some extra furniture.

Yes I did when I was planning to build. Then I didn t build and had a whole lot of stuff I had stored needlessly. Wish I had just got rid of it. and put the money I spent on storage aside.
