In the good old days, it was easy to tour lighthouses, but now many are closed shops, either through lack of personnel or safety reasons. The best tour I did was on Kangaroo Island, and the one of Cape Byron comes a close second. Tales of solitude and heroism are well worth listening to. Have you done a tour, and what was special about it?

#History Yes I have toured several in the South of Western Australia.
One was in Augusta I think it was and one in Bunbury -though it was all a long time ago.
We have several dotted along our coast and I find them rather fascinating and so much bigger than they look from a distance, and in a cruise ship!
I also like programmes on TV about lighthouses -there is something about them that I find interesting.
Yes, as a kid, but can't remember where.
All I can remember is being fascinated by the huge 'mirrors', & how they worked!
I always buy a 'Lighthouse' Calendar, each year.
Have a framed print of famous photo by French photographer, where keeper is standing at door, when huge wave coming in/over lighthouse from the right.
Many years' ago, won a book on 'Lighthouses of Australia'! Many beautiful pictures! I only entered the Competition because I love Lighthouses! Lol!
You may add caretaker at Sandy Cape on Fraser Island to your volunteering list. It is a wonderful experience. I bought the photo you mentioned at the local tip shop for $10. It has a beautiful frame, worth more on its own. I Googled the photographer. If you haven't done so, it is well worth the effort.
My thanks, grann!
Yes, Jean Guichard. That framed picture I have, sits below a same sized print of Hokusai's famous 'wind wave', with Mt Fuji, in the background. So top one has 'wave' coming from the left, & bottom one, has 'wave' coming from the right! They look beautiful, as one walks up the internal staircase!
When Prof Neil Oliver was doing the UK series' of 'Coast', had JG come with him, with autographed copy of photo, & helicoptered out to that Lighthouse, & presented it to the Keeper! He was SO appreciative!
No, I don't think I ever have, been in 1, bur I have walked around a couple of them. 1 was on Currarong, NSW & another 1 I think was in Geelong, Vic, in April '16. My father-in-law had a fondness for lighthouses, but I don't know if he ever toured 1.
