The Ghan goes from South Australia to Darwin, and the Indian Pacific goes across the Nullabor from Western Australia to the Eastern States.

Have you ever been on either of these trains?

Is this on your bucket list?

I've done both and far preferred The Ghan, far more scenic!
it is only a few days though, isnt it?

Hi Finy.....
How long do you expect the journey to be?
It's only Adelaide/Alice Springs/Darwin, not the Trans-Siberian! Lol. Cheers!

Sadly I haven't been on.

I have seen them go through certain railways stations...VERY Impressive!
Yes I would like to go on one day....but it's not cheap..lol..lol

Have to save all my pennies up.
No, I haven't been on either but I would love to. So yes, it's on my bucket list.

I would love to try both
The Ghan is on my bucket list and interesting comment that this is more interesting than the Indian Pacific which I have also not done.
So, no I havent been on either.

Yes! The Ghan to Melbourne! Absolutely beautiful ride, with scenic views, and exceptional customer service :)
Xarah -The Ghan only goes from Adelaide to Darwin, I believe? Or do you mean the Indian Pacific?
Or did the Ghan used to go to Melbourne -where were you travelling from>
by Finy
Hmm I may be getting mixed up - I went by train to Melbourne last year from ADL and thought it was the Ghan!? Whoops! haha x

The Overland goes from Adelaide to Melbourne. I have done that trip and found it so relaxing I wished it was a longer trip. I haven't been on the Ghan or Indian Pacific but hope to one day.
No, but I would love to. What an adventure!
No - but my Pop said it was great!
Went on the Indian Pacific in the late 'sixties as part of the journey from Brisbane to Perth - quite an eyeopener for a city girl in those days. Now I have driven that route several times and never tire of it. The Ghan is definitely on my bucket list although again I have driven part of the route. Would love to experience the comforts.
When I told then I would be celebrating my 60th birthday on the Indian Pacific they baked me a cake - complete with candles - which I share with the whole dining room!!

Have travelled on the old 'Ghan' via Marree to the Alice. Have been on new 'Ghan' to Alice Springs.

Have been on 'Indian Pacific' from Perth to Port Pirie & Sydney to Port Pirie.
Have been on the 'Gulflander' Normanton to Croydon.
Have been on the 'Sunlander' from Cairns to Brisbane.
The 'IP' & new 'Ghan' were First Class, to get shower in room.
I've only travelled on the old Ghan, back in 1979. overnight from Alice Springs to Oodnadatta, where I was going to be staying with my brother & his wife who were running the Pink Roadhouse. A VERY slow trip. The train only went 20 or 30ks an hr!

PS: About 2 weeks ago, SBS had a 3hr ad free Ghan train trip. Most interesting. Then the following day, they showed the train trip ALL day, but I forgot to watch it.

No but would love to?
It seems so expensive and as a Pensioner even more so.
Farley
Yes Farley, I'd agree! We've always thought those train trips were very expensive when I've seen the adds on TV & in the newspapers. My husband & I aren't pensioners luckily just seniors in our early 70's, who'd rather spend our spare cash on cruises once a year, if possible, (but they'd have to be 14 days or longer.)
