I use an alpaca doona which is light and very warm in winter, but not so hot in summer!
I also have a home knitted - by me - fabulous blanket on the bottom of my bed.
Oh, and of course I have my electric blanket which is on just before I go to bed, and then off when I get into the bed!
We have always had doonas as my parents were European and that is all they had.
Some people might think it's overkill, but I have a doona and a blanket AND I've been known to put an extra doona on in really cold weather, but it is only a light doona.
However, I'm not sure what the temps are where everyone else is, but our winter mornings were often below -5
I have a doona, as it is light and fluffy, but keeps me toasty warm. Blankets are too heavy on my body and make me too hot in bed !!! Doonas have a cushion of air around me, and breathe well. No sweaty sheets and blankets here !!! Fresh glorious air, and completely natural.
During the last two winters here in Nth Qld, I have not needed any extra covering for warmth at night as it simply has not been at all chilly!! I used to have a light doona on my bed in winter, but that was at least 3 years ago!
I don't need one. Winter is the only time I put my cotton bedspread on. Comes off at the first sign of warmth. I sleep only with sheets normally and my windows are open 24/7 buf I've full length floor to ceiling shutters so that insulates me somewhat and the spaces between each slat are open.
We used to have an electric blanket, then my mother gave us 2 duck down donnas she hd made for us, by a Chinese man in Paddington. We had them dry cleaned once, & didn't go to collect them for about 3 months, because we were waiting for winter to roll around again, so we wouldn't have to store them! When we did go to collect them from the drycleaners, 1 of them wasn't our 1! So we now have 1 of ours & 1 of someone else's, who has our 1. Luckily, the other 1 is also duck down. Our daughters both had wool blankets to match their bedroom colours.
