Yes I loved the jive when I was young, was pretty good at it too with my circular skirt, tiny waist (that's gone) and stiff petticoats...and ponytail of course (mine was fake, I got into trouble spending all my pocket money on it at the time!
Well Donjo, I remember Johnny Okeefe playing at the Workingmens Institute Hall in Darling Street,Balmain. My mother thought that he suffered a psychiatric handicap, but I used to hang over the balcony (upstairs) trying to take in a little of the music. So long ago.
Best ever type of dancing. My husband was a great jiver and used to do competition rock 'n roll with his sister as partner. I wasn't so hot at it but still enjoyed being thrown over his shoulder and through his legs - very energetic and exhilarating! Like Fran also loved the stiff petticoats and circular skirts. We used to stiffen the petticoats by soaking them in sugar water would you believe? Had a tiny waist too (21") - not so much now though!
Oh Gosh!!! YES!!!!! I learned how to do this at high school and loved it so much that I took the offer to go to outside-of-school lessons!! I did all sorts of styles:latin(which Jive was then part of),ballroom, etc and I completed all my grade tests and medals at high levels.I also won a few competitions, but I stopped when it became just too expensive to compete with all the fabulous dresses which soon came into being a major part of this 'sport'. Jive is definitely something you never forget. It makes you feel so good,so cheerful to dance this style as it is simply great fun!!! And it keeps you very fit too!!!
Sure do & sure did! My "heyday" was in the 60's & went to many dances & jived every dance in crowded, hot, sweaty dance halls without air conditioning. Whew! Loved it & until a few years ago could still do at least 1 dance. But my puff doesn't extend all the way now, but, oh, the memories!
