Yes, jaffles, yum! And the fillings, where do I start. When we were kids Mum always did them with chedder cheese, these days I prefer mozarella and if I had to choose this would be my favourite. But I also often to crack an egg into them, it soaks through the bread and I love the flavour. Baked beans are good too, or tuna, or ham. Goodness, it's nearly lunc time and this is making my mouth water.
yum gayle -sitting here thinking of the mozzarella, stringy cheese inside that jaffle.......
I threw out my machine a while back, we used it for a few months....then it became a total pain to clean it....every single time we used it.
It took forever....so no more ' Jaffles' for us!
I'm happy, as I would never look forward to making them, because of the clean up.
Hi Jonaj, is that not just an electric sandwich toaster? It's NOT a Jaffle iron!
But I know what you mean by cleaning it; right PIA! I just get all the 'spills' etc off it whilst it warm, with paper towel. Then once it's cooled, use a sponge with w/u liquid on it to remove grease. Wipe with wet paper towel, then dry with cloth. Ready for next usage!
Jaffles? Not heard that term before! Judging by the photo, I guess it's what I would call a toastie or toasted sandwich.....
We used to make them a lot but I'm not supposed to have bread or dairy any more so haven't had a toastie in a long time! My favourite filling was tuna, diced tomato and grated sheep cheese, with some mustard. Yummy!
Hi VerityG.....
Jaffles are made with a 'Jaffle iron'. You can still buy them, I think, at camping shops. They've a long handle, two iron 'rounds' at the end in which you'd put whatever 'filling' you wanted & hold them over or in a fire! This filling would be totally 'inside' the closed 'irons'.
A modern day sandwich toaster machine is very different!
Nope, not here in Britain at least. You can get sandwich toasters that produce completely sealed toasted sandwiches, exactly like the one in main photo here. So you might have a different name for it but it's still the same thing.
Aaah, no, it's not the same thing! As explained above, I'll add that a 'Jaffle' iron is NOT electric! It goes over a fire! Or if completely iron, including handles, can go in an oven, as I had as a child. Some handles are wooden, so cannot go into an oven, but perfect for over campfire!
An electric toaster, is only, & just that, an electric toaster.
Have you not seen a proper 'Jaffle' iron, VerrityG?
I love a good jaffle! I really enjoy Chicken, cheese and tomato with cracked black pepper.Mmmm !!! I also like all sorts of pizza type fillings. I have enjoyed wonderful Sweet fillings as well, such as apple, sultanas and cinnamon!!
I used to make jaffles, many years ago. Now my husband just likes his bread toasted in the toaster, with a cheese & tomato filling, & I mostly do mine in a pan on the stove, same filling, but also with chutney or pickles.
