Are any of you aware of "World Sparrow Day"?

World Sparrow Day was celebrated on March 20, 2014. With the changes in climate and confusion between urban, sub-urban and farming areas, current generation children may not have seen the sparrows let alone know there is a day dedicated to small cute birds.

What we can do to save them:
Please have a bird bath in your backyard
They love raw rice, lentils etc. & Mynahs can feed on fruit pieces
Or hang an upside-down birdbox with sufficient water and grains

Please share your ideas too here!

I didn't know there was a day for them. You can see plenty of them in the city hopping around picnic tables and dining areas along with the pigeons and ibis. They are pests here in Australia (as are Indian Mynahs) so I certainly wouldn't be feeding or encouraging them at the expense of native birds like finches, wrens and honeyeaters.
The ones in the picture don't look like the birds I am thinking of, the common house sparrow.
I didn't know of World Sparrow Day, but I'm glad there is one; it is sad that they are in decline. Sparrows used to be in abundance, and now are a rare sighting.
It surprises me to hear that they are in decline elsewhere. Perhaps we should send some of ours to Europe.
Great ideas, I love little sparrows.

I do now! I like to encourage the native birds to my garden by having native plants for them to feed on.
No, I did not know about World Sparrow Day.
I cannot have a bird bath as if the birds jumped to the ground I would worry that one of my dogs would get them, thought possibly birds are much faster than a dog..

I wonder if cats are at all responsible for the decline in sparrows.

I actually don't think we have these birds in Western Australia which is odd as I don't think they are a native to Australia.

No I didn't know about World Sparrow Day but if I'd seen this earlier, I would have left a bird bath and watering dish for them as we did during the heatwave in January. Sparrows are sooooo adorable and remind me of God's promise to look after us.
Why don't I know about this 'promise'? Please explain, lol.

I've never heard of them, but I'm with Jennifer on this one. We've got to put the needs of our natives ahead of other species.
