Yes, Yes!
Having a lot fo zucchinis at the moment I made the above zucchini pickle. In fact I have made it twice in the last week.

It is really the only one I ever make with a foolproof recipe.

Everyone loves it and I will give it away now as presents as I have about 10 jars.

Quite easy to make apart from having to chop the ingredients finely,.....very YUMMY

So, Finy, can the sugar be decreased, or will it affect the outcome?
by Rice
you could decrease it a bit but with all the vinegar you need some sugar -you could put say ¼ cup less I would think.

Finy, Don't the jars need to be sterilised in the oven before use? As our oven doesn't work anymore, can they be sterilised in the microwave oven instead?

No never have.
Not something I have ever thought about doing, time has always been a big problem for me.

I spend a lot doing one or two things....In fact this question has given me some insight into just how much time I do use?

Not sure I would start now, as also I lack in the 'wanting' to be in the kitchen cooking. :(
now if we lived closer Jonaj, I would bring you a bottle! I love cooking.

Finy, can the sugar be decreased, or is it part of the formation process?
by Rice
Sorry, jonaj, thought I was in Finy's house.

No, never, but I will get brave one day and have a bash.

I once pickled chili. I was pretty happy with the outcome.

I haven't yet made as my friends share their preparations with me so there is always enough at home not getting the need to make my own. I have quite a variety. Will take some pictures and post them.
Yuk. Don't like pickles !!
I have made various delicious pickles from fresh vegetables quite often, but not recently.I do however, often marinate pitted kalamata olives, tomato, and chopped capsicum in my favourite Balsamic vinegar and a little olive oil! No cooking required and just scrumptious!!! I have also added very thinly sliced cucumber to this mix for a whole different take on it! I use Vegetable salt rather than normal salt as I love the herbs which are part of the mix,and which are so flavoursome!
The pickles I have made include various chutneys including mango, tomato,as well as sweeter fruit chutneys. As well as these spreadable types of pickles,I have also done mixed vegetable pickle(giardiniera) and dill cucumbers to name just a couple more.
These days I am always given lots of different pickles made by friends, and with my arthritis,I find this is great as I no longer find the task of making these treats at all easy.
No, not interested anymore.

My maternal Grandmother made THE best jams, & preserves. Her pickled Onions....ooooh! Even as a child I loved them.

Nowadays, I just buy '3 Threes' Spreadable' from Woolies.
Love it on freshly made Ham, or Cold Corned Beef sandwiches.
Mum and Nan used to make lots of pickles and chutneys but I never seemed to have the time. However we were visiting a farm near Tweed Heads where we tried these fabulous eggplant pickles. I asked for the recipe but for the amount of work that went into making them, it just wasn't worth the small yield so never again.
I thought pickles only came in jars !!!
We have made pickles using cucumbers only so far, but would like to try more in the future.
I will preserve just about anything. I even.have a recipe for pickled chicken feet on recipe yum.

No I have never made my own pickles

I get my canned fruit and pickled veggies from my wonderful neighbor who goes south to Florida for the winter months and lives on a farm there.
yes
Yes frequently as it is a good way to use up the odd leftover vegetables. No two batches of pickle are ever the same and the family enjoy the variety.
No, I'd never even thought of making my own pickles!
