He was not one of my favourite actors.

He usually played the same sort of role or rather that is all I seem to have seen him in.

I preferred some of the other "old" timer actors more than I did John Wayne.

I guess he WAS a good actor but I do not know why he seemed so popular.

No, I never liked him either, (whose real name is
Marion Robert Morrison.) He married 3 times, cheated on his 2nd wife, had 7 children, 26 grander children, smoked 5 packs of unfiltered smokes per day, & was a heavy drinker. When suffering cancer, he lost 100 pounds, needed an oxygen tank, & couldn't walk more than 20 feet.
At the end, he asked his sons to hand him is...38, so he could end his agony..

His first real name is what you say, but then it was changed to Marion Mitchell Morrison.
Really? Have never heard before that he committed suicide, as you say above.
Very hushed up that was. Suppose couldn't have 'The Duke' a coward!

No actor is/was perfect in real life - I took the question to be "did I like him in movies".
by wotsy
Oh! wotsy, IMHO I think Mr Charlton Heston was 'good' in real life. And he was a darn fine actor, too!
by donjo
I did, until I found out his 'true-likes' in life.
Seems like a lot of famous actors fell very short of who they portrayed.

When I went to Hollywood many years ago we saw his footprints in the 'walk of fame' they put in the sidewalk in cement.....and he had very small feet! quite a surprize.
What were his "true" likes in life ?
by fran.
Oh! jonaj, the feet imprints are of his wearing 'cowboy boots'. They don't give the true size of feet, as the 'impression' is only heel, & ball of foot, so there's probably a few length-inches 'missing'! Lol!
He was a tall man, so he would've had regular to large sized feet!
by donjo
Hahahahaha. So funny. jonaj, that is so something I would have said without a second thought!

I have no interest in Westerns and never watched one of his movies.
Not particularly. I have only seen one movie in which he actually caught any of my attention, and that was the very last one he ever made!!! I cannot even remember what the name of it was!!! Sorry! He just has never appealed to me.
I prefer Clint Eastwood. I thought John Wayne was good in The Searchers, which is an interesting movie.
Regardless of genre of movie he always seemed to play the same type of role which got a bit boring.
Nope.
He just played himself, never acted.
His voice was very grating on one's ear.
Not a very moral person, by all accounts.
Too much grog, & ciggies finally did him in.
I have never seen a John Wayne movie !! I do not like westerns. He was a bit before my time.
NO he didn't commit suicide. He just asked his sons for his gun! He DID die from cancer. I always thought he had 3 M'M's for his initials, then was very surprised to see "Robert' as his middle name!
(And yes I did watch a few of his movies, but only because my husband was watching them.)
by Miro
Yes, miro_, he did have 3 M's to his name! See my reply to you above! Cheers!

It would be more than I liked some movies with John Wayne starring in them. My favourite would have to be "the Quiet Man" - John playing opposite Maureen O'Hara. If you've never watched this movie, treat yourself to a couple of hours of great viewing.

Rats....I meant to say.... "It would be more THAT I liked ... etc"
by wotsy
wotsy, if I had a movie I enjoyed of his, it would be 'North to Alaska'. It had a fabulous theme!

His 'best' role, IMO, was that of Tom Donovan in 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance'. The 'villain' was well-played by Lee Marvin.

My dad likes him as an actor, but I can't say in all honesty that I've ever watched one of his films...to my knowledge, at least.
by Vee
My brother is a big fan but I have none of his movies. My dad always said he just wore a different hat for each movie. LOL. From what I have read he was a very rude man and a bigot. Other than that I know that Dean Martin bought his movie horse from him and it's name was Tops.
by Rice
Yes pilgrim he's the the iconic cowboy.
I can watch his film The Searchers again and again -fabulous.
