A few public figures such as outspoken author and atheist Christopher Hitchens and comedian Jerry Lewis have said that women are not funny. Such comments have provoked public outcry and various counter arguments and essays including a hilarious response from comedian Tina Fey.

What do you think? Are women not as funny as men?

That sort of a claim is outrageous.. In my life I've known that everyone is blessed with sense of humor and the ability to make others laugh or laugh at oneself in copious quantities. It's unfortunate for those men not to have perceived these great qualities in the women they've met in their life. Most often what you see in others is most often a reflection of yourself. Also when the world thinks they're the funniest, may be they showed only their serious sides to the ones who cared or mattered.
Finally it doesn't really matter what they believed, it just isn't the truth!
Yes, there are loads of funny women out there: Jo Brand, Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, Celia Imirie, Maggie Smith...the list goes on. Just because there are not as many female comedians/ comedy actors in the industry does not mean women aren't funny.
Yes, women are funny. It's possible that the market for funny women just isn't as huge as the market for male comedians.
I agree. Women only came onto the "scene" thanks to the feminine movement in the 60's. So we have not really had centuries to impact the market...and so far we are doing GREAT for the time we have had! ;)

Yes, 100%. And it is all the the eye of the beholder.
Jerry Lewis!
OMG....That man was a very sad individual. After reading about the real person....I would not ever believe anything that came from him.
I never thought he was funny, stupid yes.

Women can be wonderfully funny, and smart at the same time.
Women are funnier. I watched 'The Heat' for the second time yesterday, it was incredibly funny. Women have good timing, and I can relate to their physical humour too, because sometimes the physical humour is not characteristic of being 'feminine' and I like it when women break the mould of stereotypical femininity.
Of course women are not as funny as men! When will people understand? Men are so much better than women at absolutely everything? That's why a woman's place is in the home. Gosh!

The BBC has just decreed that its panel shows should have a certain percentage of women. Any performances made prior to this decree will not be in breach of the new rules.
I think everyone has a sense of humour.
There are many talented Australian female comedians , Kitty Flanagan being my favorite.

this is so sexist it should not even be here!!!!!!!
The question? Did you read the explanation underneath?
no I did not read the blurb but I stand by my comment.

It's there to stimulate discussion, like a number of other similarly controversial questions on this site. I thought it was pretty clear from the explanation and linking to Tina Fey's response that it's not my personal opinion.
Of course anybody can be funny.
The opinions of Jerry Lewis and Christopher Hitchens are the opinions of two men only. Men from an era when the little lady's role was to look pretty and co-operate with what a man wants. Being a comedian might be too confronting and prove that there is actually quite a good brain inside that pretty little head.

Yes, I think you've hit the nail on the head there.
I think women can be great comedians, however it does irk me when they try to be funny by being crude. I don't think comedy=crude but sometimes I feel aspiring female comedians go down this path.
