Best way to get kids to exercise?

With an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, and 'play' often including sitting in front of a screen, what's the best way to make sure kids get enough exercise?

Do you sign them up for a team sport? Swimming or tennis lessons? Go for regular bushwalks as a family? Or sign up for special events - bike races or triathlons, then train for months?

What's the best way to get kids to exercise?

If kids have fun, they are more likely to exercise. Let them find a sport they enjoy or one which their friends are part of. But even going to the beach or the park can be good exercise for them, bring a Frisbee, ball or badminton set and they will have hours of fun and not even think of it as exercise.
We are registered for the Electric Run (http://www.weekendnotes.com/electric-run-australia/) and are currently training each weekend and after school with 5km runs, as we'll need to stick together in the dark. The kids are excited about the party atmosphere. They still talk about the Color Run they did in Feb.
Kids need two things to exercise regularly: fun and competition or goals. Finding a sport or exercise that your child finds enjoyable is a surefire way to get them to exercise. To keep them focused on exercising, goals should be set. This could have them competing against and wanting to beat another opponent or making through try-outs for a team or just setting a personal goal and beating it.
Swimming lessons are fantastic, for fitness and water safety! But non-structured family time can be fun, too, like kicking or throwing a ball in the backyard or the park, or playing a relaxed game of family basketball.
Maybe encourage them rather than calling it 'exercise' encourage them to play outdoors games like hide and seek and tag never go out of fashion and the kids seem to really enjoy it (while getting some exercise). Otherwise see if they have any interest in a sport could be cricket, basketball, table tennis or even karate/taekwondo.
Our 5 year old grand-daughter, who’s nearly 6, loves her scooter, & her swimming lessons. And there’s a lot of stairs in ‘her’ house, so she’s using those all the time she’s home from school, as well. Before she started school, she went to a kids circus for 4-5 years old, & really enjoyed that. And she loves going to the kids parks, around where she lives in Melbourne.
Give them a reason to exercise.
