When I lend money to my friends, I consider it a gift. Because it's likely it won't be coming back ;)
It would depend enormously on the friend, the amount and the circumstances. I have both lent and given in the past and it's worth noting that ALL loans have been paid back. I'm happier about loaning money than books to be honest.
I think it's not just up to me anyway, some people would be very uncomfortable taking a gift and would very much prefer it to be a loan they can pay back, then it isn't charity and they don't feel patronised. Other folks that isn't always an option or the circumstances are such that they don't view it like that, so then a gift is more appropriate. I would rarely see it as just my decision to make, it takes to tango and to be a donor requires a donee,,,
If I had it, I would give it.It's that simple. :)
Say members of my family all the time. It can be annoying. Sometimes when we go out, I feel like a charity case because everybody insists on paying. I too insist, but they are older than me and threaten to take offence.

Send them a little bunch of flowers, saying that you love them.
That way, they know, that you know, and they don't quite have that edge.
It works very well :)

I don't have any friends that I consider close enough to lend money to.
It would really depend on circumstances, which friend, how much, whether I could afford to just give it away (which is very unlikely).
Money is something that can cause conflict, even between siblings and other relationships. So lending money must be returned.
I would definitely lend money to most friends, however I would expect it back as I have worked hard for my money and my friends know this.

Gifts are for my children.

If my friend needs the money it would be given as a gift . Why make their problem worse by putting them in debt?
That's a hard decision. It could cause a rift between a friendship. I like helping out and giving, but, I would be careful in my decision to lend money.
