Treasure map x marks the spot kiss pirate

Writing Christmas cards earlier, I asked my son if he wanted to put a kiss on any of the cards for his friends. He then carefully drew a big circle around his best friend's name and was confused when I explained that a kiss is normally written as an "X". He thought it meant treasure as in "X marks the spot"....

I couldn't explain why and it made me wonder: why does an X represent a kiss?

The X referred to the cross of Calvary and the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Xristos.
People would kiss the "X" as a crucifix or bible was kissed
to emphasize the importance of the mark.

It was this practice that lead to the "X" representing a kiss.

Oh thank you! So it's the same as the X in Xmas then :)
Christmas kisses all round!
not sure about the XMas one?....lol but sounds good enough.!

Interesting. Thanks for the explanation, jonaj.

That's really interesting. I had always wondered this myself.
Yes, the X in Xmas stands for Christ, so although it looks like a secularisation it's actually a very ancient way of writing Christmas :)
I have no idea. But I like Jonaj's explanation - that makes sense!
Because x marks the spot!

I dunno actually but here's a kiss xxx
Awww thank you :)
x x x x back at ya! :)

jonaj's response is probably the correct one but I like the theory that the 'x' is meant to look like pursed lips. I also read somewhere that it's based on the sound of the word and the sound of the letter i.e when you use 'x' in a word it sounds like 'kiss.'
My son drew the circle because he thought that best represented pursed lips!
I agree with X sounding a bit like kiss though :)
Because a J would look plain ridiculous!
