Hi Meggf....keep planning your Egypt trip! It's absolutely amazing! Many years' ago, flew from Athens (saw Parthenon & went to Delphi) to Cairo. To see the Pyramids from the air was goosebumps material! Saw them on the ground, went inside Cheops' & came out at 16th level & climbed down from there! Cairo Museum, then flew to Abu Simbel. Cruised from Aswan to Luxor, seeing all the Temples & various Burial Chambers, including Tu-tankh-amun's & SETI I, Hapshetsut's Temple etc etc etc.
Had always wanted to go to Egypt, & was NOT disappointed!
I don't know that it counts as really "ancient" but the old castles and such throughout Britain. As well as Stonehenge. I think that Europe gets overlooked when talking about checking out "ancient" stuff! I have no plans to travel overseas though so I will settle for exploring ancient Aboriginal caves, and paintings here in Australia.
A lot of my travels to date have been based around seeing ruins. I've done two trips to see the Mayan temples in Mexico, Belize and Guatamala and have visited Cambodia to see the amazing temples around the country including those in Angkor Wat. I have visited Egypt but we were in the Luxor area so enjoyed the ruins and tombs there, but would love to visit the pyramids. I am yet to do Machu Picchu but it's on the list for when the kids are older. I love history and seeing some of these amazingly preserved ruins is a real glance into the past.
I'd like to do a massive monument tour of the world! Stonehenge was great but being able to walk among, and touch, the standing stones at the Ring o' Brodgar, erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC, was truly amazing. I've learnt to look beyond the tourist places.
On my bucket list are South America and Middle East/North Africa.
Have always wanted to journey from Turkey, & visit every country's ruins down to Iran.
Maybe, one day, if there's anything left!
Other sites I'd love to go to are:
The Cave of the Swimmers'
Fly over, seeing the Nazca Lines
All the ruins after Mexico, through Meso-America,
& into the countries' in the northern part of Sth America
The Entombed Warriors' at Xian
Roll-in big 'Lotto' win, & I'd be off faster than the 'proverbial'!
