A lot of outfits shown on the catwalk are actually unwearable in real life. What is the point in making ridiculous looking clothing that no one can wear outside a fashion show? And why do designers call them a masterpiece?

To me, they are works of art.....simple.

I can see how the designer has had a idea, and wanted to show that idea off.
There are few that can not be worn.
Some would make a great outfit, for a ball or the like for entertainers.
I'm intersted to hear what other people have to say about this one. Catwalk fashion is weird. I don't know or care very much about fashion but I think the idea is that the catwalk shows generate publicity for the designer, and the more outlandish the design the more publicity it generates.
That is a very good point about publicity you have there.
So that dumb folks with money to burn could indulge in buying equally dumb & ridiculous kind of garments. But if you're lucky sometines you get to see beautiful models wearing normal outfit. Now days the trend is for choosing skinny models with skeleton thin arms, legs the faces look like they are on drugs. As if that is not enough & these models are not allowed to smile.

I think Jennifer has a very good point. Not only does it get the designer better known, but there is also the fact that selling tickets to catwalk shows can generate a lot of revenue for the industry. And let's face it, who is going to pay lots of money to see something they can get on the high street?
Apparently lots of people? Although like you and Jennifer, I don't get why. I get it that it's not so much fashion, but art, but that's not my thing, and I certainly wouldn't pay good money for that. Mind you, I guess it's a bit like performing art - we pay to see musicians perform etc, so why not the same for these meat markets - ooopps - sorry, I meant fashion exhibitions...

I think the name 'fashion show' gives it away. It's a show, and as part of the show there needs to be an element of a spectacle to look at. A whole catwalk show of easy to wear outfits in colours and shades that you'd immediately want to wear might not make for much of a show. Instead, I think a fashion show blends together new wearable designs and items, with some completely show shopping pieces of art. Additionally, for some shoes where the outfit is completely random and unwearable, it can actually be the accessories that are being shown off. Sometimes it can be a pair of shoes that is actually on show, but the model is dressed in a showstopping outfit for the wow factor that the accessory alone wouldn't solicit.
Some of them ARE masterpieces and look so stunning on the models, even though most people would not wear them.

The local ones that I have ever been to have been very interesting, and I have actually bought something that I saw at a fashion show -I think it was at David Jones, many years ago.

The ones we see on TV are usually the weird ones or the ones competing in shows as against the local ones which used to be about selling a particular design and therefore had a purpose -to make sales!

True. Don't know.

The WHOLE fashion industry interests me not one jot!

My clothes are conservative, & I've always looked after them, so they last, & look good on ME!

Within last two weeks, have bought two jackets, a few blouses, boots, & shoes.
First big 'spend' in decades! Really love these 'new' items, feel 'good', & well-dressed in them!
