Apparently the way to achieve gender equality in the workplace is not by offering flexible working conditions, paid maternity and paternity leave, or onsite child-minding services. Apparently, the way to achieve gender equality in the workplace is to offer to control the fertility of your female staff.
According to NBC news, Apple and Facebook are offering to pay thousands of dollars for female staff to freeze their eggs lest they should be hampered by motherhood.
Advocates say the companies’ generosity supports women who wish to delay motherhood and focus on their careers. Critics say women having to choose their career before their family is evidence that gender equality in the workplace is yet to be achieved.
What do you think? Is this a step in the right direction? Should high profile businesses offer to pay for female employees to freeze their eggs and so delay motherhood in favour of career progression?
