You don't say what he planted...so I'm a little in the dark.If that is his garden the pic above, then it does look amazing! Tomatoes are great ..Lettice.
But I can't think of anything that really is not a good veg, to be totally honest.It's not always easy to grow some veg, so maybe he just put in what he thought was ok?...really need more info :)
It completely depends where you live! I'm down in Melbourne, so we get colder than psydney, or brisbane for example.
Down here I would plant my last lot of beans and corn this week, I might get away with planting cherry tomatoes as advanced seedlings, but i wouldn't try full size ones. Lettuce or greens are fine, so long as he waters.
I would be putting in brassicas for autumn, and carrots, beetroot, etc.
