Headcrop of Leonardo da Vinci's The Mona Lisa, 1503-1505.

Do you prefer oil paintings or acrylic? Maybe even watercolours or guache?

If you are a fan of paintings from all around the world, you might find it tough to just pick one as a favourite. So I challenge you to try! Why do you like it and does it hold sentimental value or appeal?

Please share an image or link if possible so we can all visually appreciate each others' interests.

My favourite is Dali's Girl at Window. We used to live in Vietnam, so we got a number of reproduction paintings. My sister was given a beautiful reproduction of this painting for her birthday one year from the painter. I was always a little jealous as a kid, because my birthday was 9 days earlier, and if we'd walked into the store on my birthday instead, I probably would have been given the painting.

But a few years ago the painting ended up in my room, on my wall that also features a window looking out to the Ocean, and I just had one of those moments when a painting makes you feel something and you don't even know why. I plan to get my own someday.
This painting is just wonderful, and I can see why you love it. :)

Absolutely touching. This is what I love about art. Thank you for sharing!

What a beautiful painting. To me, it has a serene feel, there was a programme on SBS yesterday about him, but I only caught a few minutes of it. Girl at Window must have been before his surreal era?
I love watercolours, and I have a framed free give away with a daily paper - the person in front of me in the queue tossed it in the bin! It's by Serat, a scene of bathers by the Seine.
But we love Jeffrey Smart's work. Very stark, but here in Adelaide we have a very modern new building we call the cheesegrater, atm. it has cranes in the background, with the tram passing by, a plane overhead, its like driving through one of his paintings...

I'm not really a fan of paintings, so cannot say that I have a favourite, but one that comes to mind is Edvard Munch's 'The Scream'. I think that is only because it reminds me of 'The X-Files' though.

I've seen plenty of paintings that I like more than that, but I can't remember them because they were by small time artists, and unlike the famous names, do not get their work flashed around everywhere to make it stick in your mind.
I have looked at this painting for years and years...and I feel he was suffering.
Could have been depression.
Whatever it was he really has caught it, on the canvas!
by jonaja
I agree. It is definitely a sign of distress or some kind of depression.
I appreciate your interpretation, the x files! That is very revealing!

don't ya hate it when you get two up there, that has happened to me twice this week....wish they would fix it.

Yeah, I always feel guilty when it happens too. It is when the page needs refreshing, the message gets posted twice.
Oh, Natasha's post just reminded me of another painting that I really like. That is Salvador Dali's 'Melting Clock'. I like the surrealness, and also the concept that is meaningless.
I love the ants in this work! They make it all the more disturbing in a good way.

Yes I love The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum by Vincent van Gogh.
Van Gogh is a genius!

I love The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. You can't tell from the reproductions, but this painting takes up an entire wall of a room in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence. It has such a striking presence that people just stare at it in awe when they reach it, me included.
This is another painting I would like to see in person, I had no idea? it was so big.
by jonaja
You're right, it's very important to appreciate the painting for what it is and how the artist has crafted it; whether tiny and hand held or mural scale. The details are important to how we are to interpret it.

There are so many good ones, even by independent artists. Anything by pro hart as he makes a mess, and I do love the Mona Lisa - Leonardo Da Vinci.
For sure, don't forget the independent artists or upcoming talents you may know of.

I adore all the art by Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema.

My favourite is ''The Baths of Caracalla'' I look at that painting, and just wonder what these 3 ladies could have been talking about.I think I am the one in the middle, listening very carefully to her friend talking.
My dream would be to see it in person!! wow.

Sir Lawrence was nothing short of a Genius, in my view.

Beautiful! I admire his brushwork :) Thank you.
