Sometimes materialism seems okay when you are out at the shops. Especially when you have spotted something that you would love to have--and would fork out for.

What is the most extravagant thing you have purchased for yourself?

It could be an experience, a holiday, an item? Tell us why it is so extravagant to you.

An education. I used all my savings to pay for my education...I figured it was more of an investment than something extravagant...and I figured that I could make the money back later in life! :)
Education is a valuable asset and worth investing in. Thanks to HECS I can focus on my studies whilst also trying to make some income to pay it back in time.

A trip to Italy for a conference - cost me heaps, but man it was totally worth it! :D
Italy is amazing in general, but a conference shows dedication! Hope you had a blast.

An overseas holiday. It put a pretty serious crimp in my savings but was definitely worth it.
How fun, I wonder where you went?

Europe. I visited a few countries while I was over there, but it was the plane ticket from Australia that cost most of the money.
Well, many many years ago.
When it was in total fashion....and winter, I went out to buy a loaf of bread, we had run out.
I also went into one of Sydney's main department store....to just get through to the main shopping area.Big Mistake!
There on a rack were some 'rabbit fur jackets'(now this was when people were buying fur.Along time ago.
I was cold that winter, and the rabbit jacket was warm....I bought one.
Forgot the bread?....but was warm for a good few winters.(yes others had them too). Now I know better. You don't wear fur.Unless you live in Russia, then you have too.
Thankfully fake fur doesn't cost nearly as much!

A suit that cost me $800. I didn't need something so extravagant for the job
I had, but it was Italian and the cut was fabulous.
I envy a good woman suit. You can get them tailored because they are well made.

I often buy extravagant things i.e. something I don't really need, or can live comfortably without.
My latest one is an insulated garage door to keep the heat out of the garage. Nothing wrong with the old one, but I wanted a new one!

That sounds like a decadent lifestyle, but insulation to keep heat out sounds like a smart idea for any Australian.

A diamond ring. I loved it but it was stolen when my home got burglarized, oh well, I enjoyed it while I had it.
