Vegetarian not-bacon or turkey bacon, perhaps? I have not tried either as I love bacon and have no allergies or religious reasons for not eating it. I do, however, find myself eating it very infrequently because, you know, piglets. They are sooo cute.
yes pigs are cute..and you should be having vegie bacon not for religious or allergic reactions but because pigs are treated cruelly and they should be left alone! vegie bacon is good..you can even make your own! http://freefromharm.org/vegan-recipes/vegan-bacon/
Some recipes like quiche or Caesar salad (without chicken) absolutely need bacon in my opinion. Where bacon is just used for garnish it can be easily left out.
I've tried the vegetarian bacon available from supermarkets and it you use your imagination it could taste a little bit like bacon .. but the ingredients list is quite long and I wonder how healthy it is for you being so processed. (And yes I know that bacon is not necessarily healthy either!)
I've read that strong tasting mushrooms might be an alternative so I'm keen to try that in a quiche but I'm concerned about what happens when the mushrooms cook and shrink in the quiche.
I've tried turkey bacon in the past but I've never seen it for sale in the shops. If it was widely available I think that would be a good answer.
Perhaps there is no really good substitute in Australia?
Sometimes we substitute ham for bacon, if we have run out of bacon. I happen to love bacon, and I couldn't imagine giving it up, or substituting it with anything else !! Certain recipes like quiche really have to have bacon, or it just doesn't taste the same. Sometimes we have eggs on the weekend, but I like to have real bacon with my eggs. Substitutes just wouldn't cut it. Ham comes really close to the flavour of bacon, but it will never be the same. I don't have to abstain for religious, dietary, or animal rights reasons, so I enjoy my bacon.
