What do you think of the latest news from Qantas? If this Company is not viable and is losing vast amounts of money, is it not OK for them to get rid of staff in order to save the Company?

Do you think our Government should be "propping up" all the companies that have a problem just because they are large companies?

How OLD is this question? There's no date on it anywhere! What 'latest debacle'? If you speak of a Financial situation, a profit has been posted for the last six months' which is a turnaround from last year's loss.

I really get sick & tired & fed up to the back teeth with negativity towards Qantas!

People forget the huge Humanitarian work Qantas does, & has done ever since! Their aircraft are now helping in the Port Vila tragedy. They'd be ferrying medical staff, food, water to there & returning our citizens to here. It flys Paramedics, Policemen, Firefighters etc around Australia to needed positions. Its' contribution to Bali bombing, Tsunami's 2004 & 2011 is incalculable, Christchurch earthquake. Let's NOT forget Cyclone Tracy where nearly 600 people were uplifted on ONE Boeing 747, & brought to safety. Which airline went to Cairo to get Aussies' out of there during civil unrest? Also went to Frankfurt to get more passengers of ANY AIRLINE out of there, during same problem?
Qantas 'foots the bill' on these occasions!

Then certain people want to 'bake it slowly' to kill it! That's utterly disgraceful.

Do all you people realize that Qantas has to compete Internationally against others' which pay NO TAX of ANY description! These carriers' also get heavily discounted fuel costs. They pay their staff a pittance. Their staff get no overtime money or superannuation. These airlines' are owned by people as rich as Croesus!

We need Qantas, not only as our National,Carrier, but also as a second line of 'air defence'.
Qantas has WON the coveted Cumberbatch Trophy (Google it!) for Air Safety TWICE! That's literally unheard of, but our fledgling airline founded in Qld, all those years' ago, has done that! Qantas is THE oldest airline in the ENGLISH-speaking world.

What Mr Joyce & the Board have done for the Company is steer it through really, really tough times & they'll keep doing that.
Bright skies' ahead for OUR 'Flying 'Roo'!

I'm not sure what to make of this hullabaloo. I certainly don't think that foreign ownership is the way to go, but, at the same time, the government cannot simply 'save' the company without management taking strategic steps (that don't include giving staff the boot) to ensure the company remains viable.

The management of these companies need to be held accountable - poor decisions made that cost people jobs. To some extent the government should assist some companies when in need, because as a country we need things, like a national carrier, to be strong. Plus, it's better to earn taxes from employed people than pay social security to unemployed.
Jona, but how can the Government prop up all these companies? Why should they? It IS sad for the workers, however many smaller companies go bust and collectively there are many thousands of people who lose their jobs, and no one cares about them.

Qantas is a company that needs help....It is Australia.
I'm hearing you, as far as all the smaller companies...but Qantas? seriously.
We are going down the toilet faster than we can flush.

I find it Amazing!! that things are left to get totally out-of-hand,and that's when a bell go's off.
Why is it that we hear about these things, and it is like the 11th hour.
I think with Australian Companies the Government should give some help, but
'why'? do we hear about these issues, when people are jumping up and down.
Do they sit and wait and wait telling each other ''it will be fine''. Why is no serious action taken, before ''the horse has bolted''? Anyone with half a brain,
would know you don't wait till it gets so bad.
But what would I know, I'm just watching and listening to another crazy situation involving hundreds of hard working Aussies about to loose their jobs.
I think the person at the top, has a lot of questions to answer. It should not happen, but it has and is a sad day for Australia.(Once again) :(
