There has been a great deal of discussion and controversy about the use of whips in horse racing. Some say the horse say the horse isn't hurt, some say otherwise.

Do you think whips should be allowed in horse racing?

Cruel without doubt.
The real evil is the gambling that surrounds horse and greyhound racing.
Race horses end up waiting in a holding pen listening to the sounds of the last horse crying in fear as it is lead into the shed to have its neck sliced open. Grey hounds shot and dumped the bush. Why? So that ladies can dress up and drink fine wine while the men gamble away the pay check. Ban gambling and start on the road to restoring our connection to these proud and intelligent creatures.
My view on this is straight forward. Whips should be completely banned from horse racing. It is animal cruelty and no two ways about it.

There was a story done on this on Catalyst (an Australian science program) trying to ascertain if the claims that the horse don't feel pain are true. It's sad we even have to ask and what about the emotonal impact ont he animal. I thought the program put forawrd a strong scientific case for banning the whip. Most importantly was the comment that one of our greatest ever race horses, Black Caviar was never put under the whip. If you're interested in the Catalyst report you'll find it here http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/4201890.htm
I loved B.C. and never knew that fact, thank you for the info :)

Yes, most definitely. Horse whipping is atrocious. Cruel to the nth degree.
No 'blunt' Spurs, either!
Personally I think the whole of horse racing is cruel, the number of horses that are injured and subsequently slaughtered is horrifying. I would ban it completely, which would deal with the issue of whips at the same time!
Horse racing should be banned full stop.
You're not normally allowed to hit animals to make them do things (well, the kind of animals we don't eat anyway) so it seems weird that it's seen as okay in the context of horse racing.
No, sorry for the bluntness of the reply but it is how I feel. I hear the argument that the horses enjoy running and therefore love to race. I just don't understand if they are having such a good time why they need to be beaten?

No, whips should not be allowed, nor should young horses at 2 years be racing - their minds and bones are so unformed. I dislike horse racing totally - I see the horses' eyes, and they are fearful and in flight.
In eventing, whips are not allowed, you guide your horse with your legs++. Their ears are pricked, they are alert, ready for the next challenge. To me, it's a beautiful sight.
Whips should not be allowed and banned forever! Yes I saw that abc show and was surprised to hear Blackj Caviar was not allowed to be whipped That just proves our point of views. The other side to racing is that if it was banned then we would have FEWER horses!
No I think it is not necessary, perhaps we should whip the rider if he doesn't win.

A friend of mine got charged by the r s p c a for smacking his dog with a rolled up news paper for biting his hand when doing a nail clip. Yet they ALLOW horses to whipped for a spectator sport and money placed on bets. F@#!!@#ING hypocrites.

Yes whips should be banned from all Horse Racing It is Cruelty to Animals BAR them

absolutely not, they try there best and are trained to run as fast as they can
Absolutely NOT! There is no place for whipping any animal.
It has been scientifically proven that whipping a horse does make it take faster steps, BUT those steps are SHORTER! Therefore, whipping is counter-productive as well as unnecessary, mean, cruel and painful to the animal.
Next time the winners are paraded infront of cameras, look at the flanks - you will see the marks left by whipping.
Download the scientific photographic proof showing how far into the flank these whips are buried at every strike. There is no fat on racehorses, yet these whips sink so far into the flank that the whip is completely enclosed by the skin. Watch this proof - then get rid of the whips forever.
No Never Ever No Never Ever No Never Ever
No Never Ever No Never Ever No Never Ever
Sorry to repeat this, but for some it takes a lot of repeating.
Racing is fun whipping is cruelty

No, - look at the eyes of the horse in the photo above.
I came across a tv. free to air station showing nothing but racing
Having watched one race I could plainly see that whips were used.... constantly.
How I would love to have reversed the situation - humans being ridden around, spurred on by whips.
No whips. Ever! Those of us who have had horses know that no whip is needed when a horse has trust. Horses will do anything for a person they trust. It's laughable (but not in a funny way) to beat a creature furiously to win what should be a fair race. Racing. The Sport of Kings. What a bloody joke.
