A fisherman and his son caught a "goblin shark" trawling off the NSW south coast.

Instead of returning the shark, which is rarely seen because it lives at depths of about 1200 meters, the pair decided to hang onto it.

Should it be mandatory to return fish such as these to the water?

I believe rare fish should be returned. To me, it's no different than trapping a rare species on land.
I fish alot and I would suggest it would have been better to take a photo and put it back.
Yes, definitely !

Of course.
No, it should not as it is another thing that would be very difficult to police.

And anyway, most of us would not know a rare fish if we caught it, so there are several problems with this.

Perhaps in theory it sounds like a good idea but I do not think it could ever work.

Yes always, take a photo or "selfie".
No need to kill the fish.
