I hate that statement, whoever said it was insane.
Nothing is fair in War.
Nothing is fair in Love.
No, I don't think it's true. I think it often ends up being a victim blaming, abuser excusing saying.

Might've been then, but certainly not now.
Some women are STILL treated like 'chattels' by men.
You've only to see DV numbers' to know now that saying is just bs!
