There have been articles in the paper recently about identity theft from letter boxes.

Do you keep yours locked, or trust that this will not happen to you?

No, I do not have a lock on the letterbox.

Too much hassle to find the key every day to look in it!

I don't think it will happen to me (!) however if it does, so be it -I am aware of the dangers.

I once had a locked letterbox and it was such a nuisance -every time I walk past it which is several times a day, I check for junk mail so with a lock I think it is very impractical.

Finy, I keep my letterbox key attatched to my car key so check the letterbox whenever I leave the house or return. That's one idea.

Hi Vee, following on your idea, keep letter box key in car boot. Have PO Box for security of mail ever since '92, when mail stolen, which included ticket to 'Phantom', in Melbourne! That inconvenience was a right pain in the ....!

I do not lock my letterbox, and have never done so or thought of doing so! Maybe I am just the least paranoid person on the planet!!! If anyone would like my identity, they are welcome to it as long as they also take the illness I suffer with every day! Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!
I lock my letterbox, but not because of identity theft. I just want to make sure nobody gets their hands on my stuff.

Yes my mailbox is locked, and under the watchful eye of cameras too, along with a few hundred others.
I'm surprised to see others don't lock their mail boxes.
My son is a Locksmith & is forever putting lock's on mail boxes, at units...that have broken ones.
After talking with a fair few who have had Identity theft, he tells me they say their lives have been turned up-side-down!! And became a living nightmare, and they had to prove who they were.It turns out to be a dreadful problem to fix!

It really makes me wonder about the sort of people that are out there. You've got to be pretty desperate to do something like that.
by Vee
Well not really Vee, it is too easy a crime...you just reach in take the mail, and you may get Lucky! It's a real favorite with 'crims'.

My comment would be similar to Finy's. used to lock it, damned nuisance so don't now but think about it still I hve to admit

We do not have a lock on the letterbox - it's a safe area to live.

Yes my letter box is locked and my key is with my house keys
by AJ
Yes, I do.
But most of my mail goes to secure P.O. Box.
Much safer! For security & peace of mind, the cost is minimal.
My Mailbox is always locked.
It is the sensible option to protect privacy or from Theft.
