I suffered about 9 months without a job last time I was laid off and this time around, I'm now on my 6th month without earning a single cent.

Not where you wanted to stay jobless, but the right job eluded your grasp until you landed another job just to end the period of unemployment.

How long have you remained unemployed?

I call myself self-emplyed rather than unemployed, because I consider writing for weekend notes as part of my job. If you don't count that, then it would be two and a half years since leaving uni.
Depends how you define un/employment.

Definition 1: Employment means deriving income from carrying out activities or from investments.

Answer 1: Never been unemployed, since commencing my first employment. For the average person, there are simply too many opportunities in Australia to generate income in a legal manner. This is separate to the issue of actually deriving it a manner that you would prefer, or in the volume that you would prefer.

Definition 2: Employment is being in the type of employment that you would prefer (eg. permanent, temp, PT/FT, casual, commission), even if not at the $ per hour rate that you would be satisfied with.

Answer 2: Have been unemployed for about 8months now. Have taken work wherever I can get it, even though it is not work that I like and often at the basic wage hourly rate. But it is neither secure nor enough hours to meet my requirement of FT secure work. We have a shortfall of about $1000 per month at the moment after we pay the mortgage essential bills only (i.e. utilities & groceries), so this is financially unsustainable.

Perth is no longer a mecca for jobs. It is now an employer's market, so don't move here from other capital cities in Australia in search of work - you probably have a better chance in the Eastern States of both getting work and in the manner that you want it - and the cost of living will be far cheaper too, which makes it a lot easier to survive while you're unemployed!

About 1 month was my longest time.
I have always taken a job straight away...even if I didn't like it.
How I wish I could do that! I have been trying in several avenues..

About three months while looking a long time ago.
I've always been doing something, even if it was a bit of waitressing and bar work between uni and my first graduate job. They were all the right job for that period in time and I think you can a little from everything you do.
Since September, as I left my job and accompanied my husband to Australia for his job. However I have been earning, even though its just some $ 100 per month, thanks to hubgarden.
Good on ya!

It all makes a difference!
13 months now after my last 'real' job for which I am trained, ended.
When I was in the work force, we never had a problem getting a job even if it was not the exact job we wanted. I believe there was also no social security (or was that in another life!)so we had to work.

It is amazing what no help will make a person do.
Anyway I started my own business when I was newly married, and went on running this even after my husband and I divorced, and we worked together for about 27 years.

So I have not really been unemployed apart from now that I am retired and would like a part time job but no one would give me this at my age, so I do voluntary work.

It's been 2 years since I quit my job to homeschool my boys :)
For 2 years now. But I make some money from blogging.
