If someone mentions a country, do you have a good idea whereabouts in the world it is and what its size is relative to other countries? Do you think having some geographical knowledge is important?

I've always been fascinated by maps, atlas and globes and the idea of adventures in different countries
I think some geographical knowledge is important, and like to think I have some idea when it comes to the regional location of countries that are better known than others. Don't ask me about neighbouring nations though, because I probably won't be able to answer those.

I would like to say my knowledge it exquisite. But I could be proven wrong!
You're so lucky. Did you travel a lot or just studied.

I have to admit that despite having studied Geography in school up to the age of sixteen, I've always been quite bad at it! However, since living in several different countries, my knowledge has increased although it's still not great. My son enjoys looking at an atlas though, so I'm learning more all the time :)
Nope; I'm useless. I can't event locate the counties in my own country. I look at maps over and over again, but I just can't retain the information.
I would have to say yes, I do have a good idea where other countries are.

As kids we would have a globe of the World in the house, and it was normal for people born in my generation....to look and find places, and learn.
We were only allowed to watch t.v. at certain times. It was one of the more important things to learn at home too. Most homes back then had a
World Globe.
I'd say 95% of the time I have an idea about where it is.

I'm reasonable, taking over this part of the annual trivia night at my church. I know a fair number of country capitals, that sort of thing, or what continent certain cities may be on.
yes, I do have a good knowledge when I went to school geography was one of our subjects, we had to know where all countries of the world were situated also the capitals and more about the country itself.
We were also taught quite a bit about our own country australia.

children of today have no idea when questioned
I do find that very disappointing .

No problem at all!

Just L O V E GEOGRAPHY, always have! Found it then, & still, absolutely fascinating, especially Geology portion. Got excellent marks at School, in every Grade for it!
We had two types to learn, back in the day......'Physical Geography & Climatology', & 'Industrial Regions'.
So Grade XII Examinations' consisted of two x 3 hour Paper's. I can remember my 'IR' paper, including Maps, was 28 Foolscap Pages! I just wrote non-stop for the three hours'!
Didn't surprise me when gained top marks, thank goodness!

Have continued 'studying' it to this day!

Interesting, on Eddie's 'Hot Seat', it's very rare for someone to get a Geography question correct, though. I think it was 'dropped' as a School Subject, for many years', hence today nobody has any knowledge of it, more's the pity!
Yes, my geographical knowledge is pretty good. Always took an interest in general knowledge competitions at school and had the good fortune to travel to over 25 countries. Love travelling - there is so much to see on this earth - also looking for someone to fund my trip to the Moon......😇
My geographical knowledge is pretty good. I was educated back in Scotland many years ago when Geography was a stand-alone subject, so geographical knowledge was instilled into us as children.
At school I was the full bottle on all the different countrys and their capitals. Then over the years they changed a
lot of the names for new names after overthrows etc ........ Globetrotter Mick
I was always really good but over the years so many countries have been renamed and boundaries moved . . . . . . I get confused sometimes.
by Rice
I also get confused with the changes of names. Years ago I met someone and asked what country he was from. He said sri Lanka to which I replied what part of india is that in . I still knew it as ceylon.
by nat_c
It's strange since I left school I want to learn more. I usually have a rough idea where people come from but still like to look at the map to make sure. Travel was very expensive at one time and now that its affordable I've been more interested in other countries and cultures.
Don't feel bad . . . a couple of weeks ago (!) I discovered that Burma was Myanmar. How embarrassing. I blame Monty Python. Haha.
by Rice
Of course you have to blame Monty. ha ha. I think we have all made mistakes as I always wanted to go to Burma to see the Orangatans. Now I cant because they changed countries. I still have the old atlas.
by nat_c
Yes as I enjoy Geography and knowing about other places around the world.
Geography knowledge is important; to understand other cultures and environs.
