Have you written a Will and if so, do your heirs know where to find it?

I have been surprised recently by several family members who have died intestate (without a Will) or who have written a Will but then put it somewhere very hard to find! Have you written a Last Will and Testament and if so, is it easy to find?

It causes a lot of problems if you die intestate (at least, it does in the UK!), so I wrote my first Will a long time ago and have updated it regularly ever since. The original copy is held by my solicitor but I have a copy in my filing cabinet and have made sure that everyone relevant knows that. When my mother-in-law died last year, my husband spent several days searching her house and eventually found her Will in the tablecloth drawer.... not the most obvious place for it! This just reinforced my feeling that it should be made as easy as possible for your heirs to sort out your estate. My uncle died two years ago and because he was intestate, some very remote relatives had an equal claim on his estate to my aunt and they are still trying to sort out some of the legal aspects of winding up his assets. The solicitors' fees will wipe out a large chunk of the estate at this rate....
That (fees) is a nuisance in itself. Ridiculous how much money some of them charge.

No, I've not written a will. But if I did I would keep it in a safe out of the sight of prying eyes. Besides I wouldn't want to see my family start any quarrels over my assets while I'm still alive.
I think I might disagree with you. If your family quarrel about your will while you are alive, I think you'd get a better idea of what to leave each member. Somebody close to me has just been through a small ordeal with another person contesting a family member's will. I think if the person was alive to see what was going on, he would be very disappointed, but at least he would know.

No I haven't but I really should.
Yes I have written one.

Not yet quite done the fine tuning.

So no they don't have copy's just yet.....
I haven't done this yet, but feel the need to do it just in case. I need to know my son will be looked after.

This is something I know I should have already done, but I have yet to do it.
I haven't written one yet. One of those things we don't like to think about but should make the time for just in case.
I haven't written one and am very much aware that my partner and I both need to as we have 2 small children. When I write one I will be ensuring that the executor has a copy.
Yes, we've done ours. No, the kids don't know but I have left a note on my iPad telling them where everything is - they'll find it!
Yes, made ours at Wedding Ceremony, as going overseas for Honeymoon.

It's with Solicitor, of course, the ONLY place to have it held, IMO!
Yes I do have a Will ....... and the Government are my Heirs.
