In times past sugar cane fields were set afire prior to harvest to remove leafy undergrowth and some of the waxy coating. Less than 20% of Australia's cane fields are fired these days; green harvesting is favoured. Growers still fire the fields in Burdekin where irrigation channels could otherwise be choked by the undergrowth.
Have you watched sugar cane fields being burned? What was it like?
