Last Father's Day our son and daughter-in-law tokk us to Emerald Lake on Puffing Billy. Despite having lived in Melbourne for decades, I had never been on our most famous train. The ride was a great experience, the steam engines are magnigicent, the views were amazing and Emerald Lake was a lovely place for luch and a walk around.
Whenever I visit my mother in Newcastle, I usually take the train up the Hunter Valley into Dungog. It's such a pretty little country town and the train makes it very accessible. The trip is also very scenic as it passes through some of the loveliest countryside in New South Wales and some very pretty and historic hamlets.
I like trains for day to day transport (so much cheaper than petrol) and holidaying. Sometimes I do a day trip by train to a suburb I'm not familiar with and have a look around. I have been on the Overland last time I went to Melbourne to visit a friend. It was so much better than making the Adelaide to Melbourne trip by bus. I found it more relaxing than flying. I am planning to do the Adelaide to Darwin trip on the Ghan in 2016.
I have done a couple of steam train trips and they were great.
