When I have a stuffy nose due to a cold or flu, I often have trouble sleeping because I 'forget' how to breathe. I then find myself in a nervous flurry, quasi-suffocating.

Has this ever happened to you?

All the time.
I do have to remind myself to breath correctly...can you believe that!

As a young person growing up, I held my breath a tad....when my stepfather was in one of his moods...it stuck with me, to this day.
Sometimes I just take a huge breath... and my son says ''Mum you ok'', and I just say''yep just breathing''?
I have always held my breath for longer than I should.
I have tried to learn how to do it normally, but
can't seem to get it right.
I'll keep trying :)
No never
No i do not quite understand the question as do not see how you can "forget" to breathe!
It is not natural as instinct kicks in....

I think VerityG nailed it in her explanation - perhaps I am thinking about it too hard. It's strange, I know. :|

Is it possible ?
I think so, Kabhi. Check out VerityG's response. I think it makes more sense than what I've written, lol.

I was just thinking today to come back to this question and read other responses. I think I get it now . Never happened with me , but now that I know about it .... ( telling myself not to think too hard)

That's the key! ;-)

Yes. It's a very strange sensation isn't it?!
I think it's because it should be an automatic reflex that just happens without having to think about it, so if something happens that makes me think about it, I don't know what to think and that makes me panic. It's not really forgetting how to breathe so much as thinking too hard about it.
I used to have a colleague who would forget how to blink when stressed and got really sore eyes as a result, so we made a pact that she would remind me about breathing and I reminded her about blinking. It worked well...
Yes, it's very strange! And I think you nailed it when you said it comes down to thinking about it too hard.

Just a couple of nights ago (Jan 21), due to a warm stuffy night, upstairs bedroom was 25 degrees and my hayfever was out of control, despite me still taking tablets.
WTF...... how does that happen.
I take it you haven't read the above explanations, lol.
