Myhusband and I recently visited Lightning Ridge and went noodling for opals on a free pile of opal dirt near the infomation centre. We had been on a tuor and shown what to look for. Mostly we found some lovely pieces of potch, the one colour common opal. It was a lot of fun. Some people have apparently found nice opals there but althoug we did not we were happy with our modest finds.
I have never heard of the term noodling, nor did I know that searching for leftover opals was an attraction. Any similar attraction I've been to, like old mines, don't allow anything to be removed. I think noodling would be fun, I'd love to give it a try!
