Once upon a time presenting a 'bought cake' was seen as cheating and using packet mix was considered almost the same. But these days there are so many variations, brands and options on the shelves with much more acceptance of the convenience of it all. Do you use packet cake mix or do you compile the ingredients yourself? Do you use the packet mix as it is or add your special signature additional ingredients?

I make it completely from scratch. Not only is that part of the enjoyment of baking, but I also know exactly what's going in it.
I choose and compile the ingredients myself. I'm not too fond of the packet cake mix
Being Coeliac I very rarely eat cake and I am not a fan of baking. I have made a couple of gluten free chocolate cakes from packet mixes in the past.
I have rarely used a packet cake mix.

I do not like them and they have a lot of preservatives.

I love my cake/sweets and make some that my German mother used to make and they are delicious, so NO would not buy a packet cake.

I love to bake from scratch but there are times when a packet cake is just so convenient. I do add my own touch to packet cakes sometimes, jus to make it a bit more individual! There are some really good packet cakes out there!
I do make it from scratch but on very rare occasions when too pressed for time I do tend to use a packet but add a bit more ingredients to it to make it less 'packet y'!
Ideally, I would like to make my cakes from scratch every time. But, time does not permit. So packet mixes are quite popular at ours.

I compile the mix myself. As this article mentions housewives many years ago just had to add water but felt that that was cheating. So the packet mix companies changed the recipe so that the cook would need to add eggs and no longer felt like they were cheating.
interesting. the whole notion of 'cheating' when cooking has so changed over the years. much to do with the perceptions of the woman's role in the home and society. I"m quite glad to add fresh eggs to a packet mix rather than the powdered version that would otherwise be there. troubled as to what other monsters are in the powder packet but use them anyway from time to tiem. I've used them to teach my kids step by step how to bake. both now make cakes from scratch but packet was a great way to give them overall confidence with all the utensils, breaking eggs, setting the oven etc..

I always make a cake from scratch - the kids love helping and measuring out the ingredients and we can choose exactly which ingredients to include. They always taste better anyway.

I have used packet mixes in the past when I was too busy to bake from scratch. Sometimes I would add one or two ingredients to vary it. These days when I make a cake I use a recipe and make it from scratch.
I like to make my own cakes but think those pressed for time would find packet mixes a godsend.
I do a bit of both, and sometimes I add my own ingredients to a basic packet mix. Beautiful chocolate bix can be made from a choc cake packet mix.
I love your cake plate, Annlu! I have never bought a packet cake in my life of 60 something years. I'd always thought it was a rather tacky thing to do. My mother never made cakes not biscuits, but she did bake her own bread. I used to make my own cakes, very rarely, but I haven't for the last 5 years or years, because of a broken down oven! These days I just buy my husband & myself an Aldi cake for our birthdays! If I'm having a family dinner at a restaurant, I'll buy a shop bought cake. Last time it was from a lovely cake shop in the Shire & it was a Tiramisu cake.
