I have a floor lamp next to my couch which has two bulbs; one for general lighting which had a lovely soft glow due to the lamp shade, and another which was bright focused for reading purposes. I love to read so this is a perfect setup for me. I don't like having multiple down-lights in the ceiling that are expensive and inefficient to run.
We must buy at the same shop! Lol!
But mine is next to my tv viewing 'bed' & where I catch-up newspaper reading!
It looks 'Art Deco' by design. Upturned medium sized bowl atop, like a 'spaceship', giving a 'soft' backlit glow for room, against 'harshness' of bright tv screen, & smaller moveable one below, for reading, as you said. I love the design, & it is EXACTLY what I wanted. Cheers!
We only have the ceiling lights. In your living areas, which I assume means the lounge/ dining areas, I like to be able to see what I am doing. Whether it be eating, entertaining guests, watching tv or doing written work at the table, I need to see. We recently renovated our house, and I stressed to the electrician that I needed good lighting for my day to day usage, and that is exactly what we have now.
I have several lamps in the two living areas of my home. I think they lend a pleasant ambience to the rooms. I find ceiling lights can be a bit harsh so much prefer lamps. I also use lamps in my bedrooms and only occasionally use the overhead lights.
