I have solar panels on my roof and they most definitely make a difference to my electricity bill. It's tiny since we got them. For the environment we need to use sustainable energy on a much larger scale, and multiple different types, but I suppose every little bit helps.
We have solar panels on our house, but because our house is facing the wrong way, we don't get much benefit from them in wi ter, but in summer it helps with the costs of the electricity. Our house is surrounded by trees, so the panels don't get a lot of sun. As to the environment, I think any CLEAN source of energy is preferable to power stations spewing out smoke and fumes. This contributes to climate change through greenhouse gases. One of our power stations have closed in Victoria, and now there are concerns as to whether we will be able to have enough power at peak times over summer. A town near us is trying to make the entire town run on solar power. I hope that they can make it a reality. We all should try to do our bit for the planet.
I am in two minds about this. The amount of toxic chemicals they use to create the panels seems to out way the pollution created by conventional methods. Also, the cost of installation would probably not do much for cutting the electrical bill. One would only see the financial reward in about 5 years! So...it is a tough decision. It would be interesting to hear from people that are seeing a difference in the bills and how long it took before they started seeing it!
I would have thought a one off cost in producing the panels would outweigh the ongoing pollution of not having them, but I'd be interested in reading more about it. Do you know of any reliable stats or articles about that?
We paid for ours outright (came into a small amount of money as a one off) and they cut our monthly bills massively. They haven't paid for themselves yet (it's been 2 years) but I think they will be a good investment in the long term.
Once you have the panels pay you back in electricity....then it is a blessing.
I just got a not in my mail box telling me that the mobile home village I live in, is putting up my electricity, as of last week.
They now want us to pay a HIKE of over
per fortnightly bill.... It is becoming a impossible to now heat the house in winter.
I have enclosed a pic of the letter I got last week...
My electricity is now going to be though the roof, (excuse the pun)?
