I love walnuts and I eat them raw everyday. For almonds, I prefer to soak them in water for couple of hours before I eat them. This is because is makes them easier to digest and unlocks access to many more nutrients.
As a child, it was my 'job' to go by tram into 'town' to Basil's Coffee Shop & buy the ingredients' Mum had written down to make her beautiful XMAS Cake. I always asked for 'slithered' almonds, & the patient Greek man behind the counter never corrected me! It was such a joy to go to that shop on my annual errand. I still miss its' fabulous coffee aroma!
Anyway, can't eat whole almonds, to this day, I'm frightened of choking, even if I masticate it well. But certainly can eat in 'slithers'!
Love walnuts! My Mum made this yummy walnut cake from a recipe of an aunt. I've all of Mum's recipe books & used to love helping her cook anything, she was just a marvellous cook! RIP, Mum.
Once when I was a teenager I had a terrible flu. My mom bought some mixed nuts which i loved. I could not stand them. I barfed and that was the end of it. I will have them in small portions but definitely not raw. Almonds on the other hand are quite fine for me.
I am highly allergic to Walnuts! Not other nuts - just Walnuts. So many people cook with walnuts and do not tell anyone that their cake/slice has blasted nuts in it!
It is so irresponsible these days with so many people now developing new allergies regardless of how old they are.
Can't stand walnuts. My mother got really ill after eating a certain brand of walnuts which debilitated her for months and never touched a walnut again. She loved all other nuts though. I often used to eat almonds but my teeth don't cope with them now. Sometimes I wonder if I had them taken out and replaced with dentures if it would allow me to enjoy them again. The same goes for other nuts as well.
