I do make one sort of pastry -it is a German recipe and published on recipe Yum, called Spatzlea and is so so yummy.
However I do not make any other pastry -I have a special machine for the German recipe....there are so many different pastries around, that I have not bothered to try my own, however am going to try gnocchi one day
I don't do either.
Never really did use pastry in any of my cooking.
Saw my mother do a huge amount of baking, and that was one of my favorite memories as I grew up.
But....it was just something I want to be 'her' thing, not mine. :)
I used to make all my own pastry except for Puff, which I have always bought as it is so much work to make! Now I very rarely require pastry,so I do just but it rather than go to the trouble of making it. My mother used to make wonderful pies with her home made pastries, and I learned so much from her.Her Steak and Vegetable pies were so good on a cold winter's night, and her Apple pies were to die for at any time. She used a basic short crust recipe which she would add sugar to for her sweet dessert pies, and this is what I always used to do as well. Very easy!!
I think I have attempted to make it in the distant past, trying to be a good little wife..mainly! Now if I was going to cook anything with pastry (don't cook much) I would def buy it...admire folk who do make their own, obviously it would be better I reckon
I enjoy making my own pastry as my mother and grandmother did before me. There is an art to making good pastry and it is so satisfying serving a good apple pie (for example) to your family when you know that you have created every component from scratch.
I did make some pastry about 30 years ago, & I don't think I've ever bought ready made pastry. Not much use really when one doesn't have an oven that works, & I have a very small work bench space anyway, so not enough room to be rolling out pastry.
