We are not a Big family, so being close means we do spend that time with the family every Christmas.
I have family also in another State, but that is a huge effort to see them.....so that really only happens every few years.
As kids' have 'left the nest', we just do 'whatever happens'.
When they were little, we had just time to ourselves & it was lovely, & very relaxingly simple;
Seafood brekky BBQ, fresh ham sandwiches or ham & salad for lunch, roast chook with veggies & gravy for dinner.
When I was little I saw one of my Aunt's literally 'slaving' over a hot oven all day doing the 'traditional' masses of food. My Mum & her other sisters' helped as much as possible, but it was still a HUGE affair, as there was probably about 25 to cater.
I'll not forget one HUGE oven tray coming to the table with just spuds in it! I'd not ever seen something like that! Her d/i/l was at the downstairs oven, cooking as well! I was determined I would NEVER do that, & I never have, or will!
Kids went to see their grandparents with their father. My in-laws' were never interested in me, so I never bothered with them.
