I live in the tropics where these are just a part of daily life.I use a very good insect repellent which was developed up at the university in the Tropical Medicine Research department, and this makes life a great deal easier.
No, we live in a suburban area where there are not many flies or mosquitoes. There are more than in the city centre but still nowhere near as many as you would find in the countryside.
It was one of the things i liked most about living in Singapore - they sprayed insecticide every evening everywhere and there were no nasty biting insects. Fantastic! On the other hand, when we lived on the outskirts of Brussels, we were very close to a large forest and in the summer our house filled up with flying insects of all sizes and varieties. It was horrendous!
Flies yes, mosquitoes, no. Spring is strange here, because it gets nice and warm during the day but still gets really cold at night. I'm told the temperature fluctuate kills off mosquitoes before they can really take hold. Regardless of the reason, we don't get many mosquitoes.
